Building project
Construction of a new house

Los Gorriones does not have the physical space to take in more children of more staff. The current rented house is very small and inadequate to accommodate disabled children. Both children and staff lack space. The children live on top of each other, sharing beds. Cooking is done on a wood stove or an open wood fire. There are no laundry facilities – and no room for more children, carers or activities.

Also, because of Ayacucho’s great poverty, there is an urgent, ever-growing demand to take in more children but for the moment, Los Gorriones has no other choice but to refuse.

Gil van den Bergh therefore wants to build a bigger, better house. Building a new house serves two purposes. First, taking in more children and the necessary staff, and have more space for everyone. Second, extending the educational, medical and psychological assistance to underprivileged families in the neighbourhood, which, due to the lack of an appropriate space, is now only possible in the form of home assistance.

First, a piece of land, a surface of 3,000 m², situated not far from the current house, has been secured by way of donation.

The construction plan for a new house is now ready too. At the demand of Gil van den Bergh, the architect José Whittembury has designed a house that would be a pleasant, comfortable place to live and work. It not only fits its natural surroundings but also respects local architectural traditions.

The new house can accommodate 50 children and the necessary staff (both paid staff and volunteers). It consists of two pavilions, each for 25 children and headed by a couple acting as heads of the family, lodgings for both the heads of the family and the volunteers, administration offices, medical rehabilitation centres (including one for neighbourhood children), an audiovisual centre (that will replace the open air movies) and a public library (that will replace the current rented space).

It is important to note that the new house has been designed with the disabled children in mind which will make the lives of both these children and their carers much easier. This in turn would reinforce the general feeling of well-being that the new house is intended to bring about.

The most important entities of the new house

A medical rehabiliation centre

The medical rehabilitation facilities would benefit the children living at Los Gorriones but also poor neighbourhood children in need of treatment. Local families would receive free treatment, consultations and advice from the general practitioner working for Los Gorriones who has been working with the children’s home for many years.

The carers at Los Gorriones have learned the necessary massage techniques for the disabled children in their charge. A proper space for this care would greatly facilitate their work and help them to develop their skills.

A free audiovisual centre

Every Friday and Saturday night, a movie would be played free of charge for both the children from Los Gorriones and the neighbourhood. For the moment, these movies are shown on the street as open-air movies. The goal is to teach and to entertain through appropriate movies.

A public library: open for all

The library is meant as a space for intellectual development where visiting adults and children can read, work, have fun, and listen to educational lectures.

Who will benefit from a new house?

The most important benefeciaries will be the children liiving at Los Gorriones as well as the children of the neighbourhoord families who appeal to the home for much-needed help. The goal of Los Gorriones is to help children, and the enw house will facilitate this goal in a direct manner. We are therefore doing our utmost to raise awareness of the builsing project, both in Peru and abroad.

Construction budget

The construction budget is estimated at half a million US dollars. At this moment in time, Los Gorriones is nowhere near this sum, despite regular fundraising. It is therefore urgent to collect the necessary funds in order to start building as quickly as possible and improve the quality of life of all who are living and working at Los Gorriones and also to extend the community work in the neighbourhood.
